Last Friday, 34 Project H.O.P.E. students from Propel Homestead and Propel Pitcairn took a field trip to the WPXI studios, an exciting visit with a wonderful tour guide, Channel 11 News Reporter Brandon Hudson. They were able to explore what happens at a local news station, both in front of -and behind – the cameras!
The purpose of the trip to WPXI was to provide the young men of Project H.O.P.E. with an opportunity to learn about careers in broadcast journalism. In addition, we wanted students to gain access to a young African-American professional who is excelling in an industry where there aren’t many black men. We were thrilled to see the young men ask Mr. Hudson questions about how he got started as a news reporter. Ultimately, we wanted the young men to walk away from the trip feeling as if they can “pursue any career that I desire,” regardless of stereotypes that surround African American men.
Students walked with away from the enriching experience with an improved sense of the news industry, and the variety careers that are available in that field.
