It may not come as a surprise to her classmates, but Propel Andrew Street High School student Tiara Tabb has a lot to say.
“I noticed at times like before I came to high school, I was kind of harsh because I tend to tell people the truth in like a blunt way,” she said.
The sophomore turned to poetry to express herself. So many people see the world in black or white, Tabb said. She wanted to find the gray.
One of her poems is featured in the latest installment of PublicSource’s “I am a black girl and…” series. The project takes a hard look at issues facing young black women through their words. Some of the participants have been Propel Schools students.
Tabb’s poem “Who Am I?” begins, “I am something seen, but very hidden – unknown. I may seem one way, but I’m completely different at home. I may be with a lot of people, but I’m somewhat alone.”
