It might be below freezing outside, but this story from Propel Montour is heartwarming enough to warm up anyone! At Propel Montour, sixteen third through fifth grade girls raised over $1,000 and donated it to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in December, an initiative established through their after school “Girls on the Run” program, led by AmeriCorp leaders.
“Girls on the Run” is a program that focuses on the social, emotional and physical well-being of third through fifth grade girls. Part of the program includes a community service component, and Propel Montour girls chose to hold a month-long “coin war” within their school to raise funds and donate them to a local organization. Even though their goal was to raise and donate $500, the final tally more than doubled the hoped-for amount, raising exactly $1,042.23.
Every cent was carefully collected, counted, and organized by the sixteen “Girls on the Run” students, and then happily gifted to the Family Life Fund at Children’s Hospital. The Family Life Fund provides education, support, and activities to help families cope while their child is in the hospital. The goal of this fund is to heal the entire family and send patients home with a family that feels supported, cared for, and empowered to continue their child’s recovery process.
The students are very proud of themselves; it is truly uplifting to watch young ones experience the joy of their hard work paying off, and the happiness that stems from giving to those in need.
Propel Montour one of nine Propel Schools, and is located in Kennedy Township, at 340 Bilmar Drive, Pittsburgh PA 15205.
