Propelled To Read - Summer Reading Program
This Propelled to Read summer reading program encourages summer reading in a fun and challenging way. It also engages students to interact with the local community to find that literacy is supported everywhere!
This summer, students are challenged to read as many books on their reading level as possible. The goal is for students to read for 500 minutes this summer, which equals about 33 steps between June 13th and August 18th. Students will be given a Strongly Recommended Reading List and a Suggested Reading List of books to choose from. Students are permitted to read books not on the lists, but are highly encouraged to read from the lists.
The program will include the Carnegie Library of Homestead and Barnes & Noble in the Waterfront. Propel students will receive a Propel branded bookmark at the end of the school year and will become their system of keeping track of the number of books that they read over the summer. Students will use the Library and Barnes & Noble as their source for checking out or purchasing books. For every book they read, a short, age appropriate book report would be completed to hand in at either the library or book store. Students will be given 10 copies of the book report form to start the summer. Students will be able to get extra forms at the Carnegie Library of Homestead, the Barnes & Noble in the Waterfront, or at Propel-Homestead during the summer school hours from 8:30 am - 2:30 pm on June 30 - July 25. Students are responsible for filling out this book report in order to receive a star sticker/stamp on their bookmark. The list of recommended books will be available at both locations.
This program kicks-off on June 3rd at the Summer Opportunities Fair at Propel Homestead. Representatives from the Carnegie Library of Homestead and Barnes & Noble in the Waterfront will be presented at the fair to talk to students and their families. Families would also be able to sign-up for library memberships and get summer reading lists at that time. Bookmarks will be on display. Barnes & Noble will offer a 20% discount on books from the reading lists that they will have on sale at this time.

Our hope is that students come back to school in the fall with star-covered bookmarks displaying the amount of reading that they did over the summer and sharing their progress with friends. Students with the highest number of stars will receive a prize. In the fall, there will be a small, celebratory event for students that have participated.
Propel Homestead students are encouraged to read at the Carnegie Library of Homestead and their local libraries.
