Mission Statement:
Propel schools will provide a science learning experience that encourages a natural curiosity, increases scientific literacy, and applies science to everyday life through comprehensive community partnerships and inquiry based instruction.
What is Propel STEAM?
STEAM education integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Propel Schools makes science education an essential part of every student’s K-12 classroom experience. STEAM instruction helps students engage in their learning. They design and create methods of understanding to solve problems w in a solution based way that is relevant to real world experiences. Meaningful STEAM instruction is guided through student inquiry, discourse and critical thinking application. In partnership with ASSET STEM, a national education improvement nonprofit that provides education materials and professional development to our Propel Staff and local Pittsburgh STEAM partners our students receive a relevant and well rounded quality science education beginning at the kindergarten level all the way through 12th grade.
Partnership:
Propel Schools develops a STEAM learning experience through relevant partnerships that connect the classroom to real-life experiences.
- We currently partner with over 40 organizations across Western-Pennsylvania
- Partners help to transfer student content knowledge to the “how to”
- Examples include: Students working with GTECH Strategies to design, build and plant a school rain garden that contains local excess rain water.
Students designing and building an underwater remotely operated vehicle with engineers from Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corporation.
Students working with Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy to develop deeper understandings of healthy ecosystems through real-time data collection.
Integration-Path
Propel Schools strives to create relevant and engaging learning opportunities for our students and educators. We are strengthening our educators and students learning capacity in Integration Learning Methods and Project Based Learning. Our new Integration Educators and Studio 4C (Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking) educators are teaching 21st century skills focused on technology and art integration. Through co-taught weekly skill based lessons students work on collaborative projects in all content areas. Students are taught how to create and solve real-world problems by using the Bucks Institute project design model: How Can I/We Build Create Something for a Public Purpose.
