Photos of scholars on a mountain in Arizona. Thank you for your interest in Propel’s Extraordinary Opportunities Program. Below, you will find a step-by-step guide for applying. Before starting your application, you will need to identify a staff sponsor.

Your sponsor will work with you through the process. However, your staff sponsor can not be a College and Career or School Counselor. Please have a conversation with your desired sponsor to confirm that they can assist.

Step 1  Research opportunities that interest you

While researching, please keep in mind the feasibility of the opportunity.

Some things to consider include:

  • We are encouraging virtual and local opportunities this year—virtual Ideas.

  • If you have to travel, are you comfortable traveling by yourself? Several students can apply for the same opportunity; however, each applicant will be evaluated individually.

  • If it is a non-local opportunity, is it a residential experience? Propel can not fund hotel stays or provide daily transportation between overnight accommodation and the opportunity site.

  • Does it meet the guidelines provided in the presentation? (Slides Presentation) Ex. Sports camps/competitions/physical training will not be approved.

  • Have you been accepted to an Extraordinary Opportunity previously? Propel has limited the lifetime award for each student to $5,000.

  • Propel can only submit payments to companies, airlines, etc. We cannot reimburse for any previously paid out-of-pocket expense or out-of-pocket expenses incurred during an opportunity.

  • Are you passionate about this opportunity?

Step 2  Complete your cost estimate worksheet
  • Your application will be considered for up to the amount listed on your Extraordinary Opportunities application.

    • Propel can not provide funding for meals not included in a camp, travel package, etc.

    • Propel can not provide funding for transportation to/from the Pittsburgh airport, if applicable.

    • Please read through your opportunities website/literature to identify if they provide transportation, or a transportation service from the local airport to the site, if applicable.

  • Please save a copy of your worksheet to be submitted with your application.

  • Cost Estimate Worksheet

    • All payments for all Extraordinary Opportunity costs are made directly to the company/provider.

The Extraordinary Opportunities Committee will review each application. If there are questions or additional information is needed, we will contact you via your Propel Schools email address.
